The down feather is unbeatable when it comes to lightweight insulation in cold environments. Its structure allows it to trap air between the filaments, which is warmed by body heat, creating a highly efficient insulating layer. However, when the feather gets wet, it clumps together, loses volume (loft) and is no longer able to trap air effectively. In addition, water conducts heat up to 25 times faster than air, making the wearer feel cold, damp and uncomfortable.
When hiking, trekking or camping in humid environments, down-filled equipment can absorb water through rain, condensation or even perspiration. That's why it's essential to keep both the outer fabric and the inner filling protected with a durable water repellent (DWR) treatment.
Nikwax Down Proof™ has been specifically designed for feather-filled items. Unlike many alternative solvent-based waterproofers or flammable aerosols - which can contain PFAS that are harmful to the environment and health - this water-based formula is safe, effective and environmentally friendly. The treatment is evenly distributed throughout the garment during washing, adding DWR to both the outer fabric and the filling.
The result is a feather that maintains its volume, insulating capacity and breathability. Moisture is repelled, water absorption is reduced and thermal performance is maintained even in cold, damp conditions. The treatment leaves a flexible water-repellent layer on each filament, while allowing moisture vapour to pass through to preserve comfort.
For best results, it is recommended to clean the equipment beforehand with Nikwax Down Wash Direct. Often, simply washing already reactivates the existing DWR. However, after prolonged use, it will be necessary to reapply the waterproofing with Nikwax Down Proof™, ensuring complete protection and extending the life of the equipment.
