Feather-filled clothing and sleeping bags offer exceptional insulation at a low weight. The structure of feathers allows them to trap air between their filaments, which is heated by body heat - this is what guarantees their excellent thermal performance. However, dirt, body oils or conventional detergents can compromise this structure. “My jacket doesn't warm up like it used to” - a common complaint when DWR loses its effectiveness or when residue causes the feathers to stick together.
Why a specific feather detergent is essential
Household detergents leave hydrophilic residues (which attract water). As a result, the outer fabric and feather filling absorb water (“wetting out”). The feathers clump together, losing loft and thus insulation capacity. Wet feathers conduct heat up to 25 times faster than air - something that can become dangerous in cold conditions.
Nikwax Down Wash has been developed specifically for feather-filled items. It effectively removes dirt and residues from common detergents without damaging the delicate structure of the feathers. At the same time, it restores the durable water repellency (DWR) of the outer fabric and filling - maintaining performance even in rain, snow or high humidity.
For relatively new products or those recently treated with Nikwax Down Proof, washing with Down Wash is often enough to fully restore functionality. In the case of heavily used equipment, it is recommended to re-apply a waterproofing after washing.
Care for maximum durability
The way you treat your equipment is just as important as the product used. A gentle programme with slow spinning is recommended. Centrifuging several times at low speed helps to remove as much water as possible without damaging the equipment.
Thorough drying is essential. Ideally, use a tumble dryer with enough space for the item to regain its original volume. During the process, it is important to manually loosen the feather clusters to restore loft. Leaving feathers damp or poorly dried can permanently damage them.
